I was diagnosed with Sinusitis on Thursday and given a two week course of Augmentin. It has been three days now and I am not really feeling much better. How long will it be before I show signs of improvement. I also was given a course of steroids and told to take them if I did not feel like the antibiotics were doing the job. At what point should I start taking the steroids. Thanks for any advice.

Phil, I don't know anything about your case to be able to tell you when you should start those steroids....this would need to be addressed with the medical provider that prescribed them.

Everyone is different as far as recovery time. It depends on YOU, your immune system, the appropriate choice/dosage/duration of your antibiotic (and steroid), and of course, the severity of your sinusitis. There is really no way for me to predict when you might feel better. I just do not have enough specific information to even guess.

Sinusitis can be a challenging infection to treat in some people. I once had to take antibiotics for 12 weeks to combat my own. Now, this is not saying your recovery will be this long, but three days is really too soon to be questioning your response. You are going to need to give it a little more time. Again, if your doctor wanted you to start those steroids and did not give you clear parameters, then call and ask when, or if, you should take them.

Well the doctor told me to wait a few days and if I did not think the Augmentin was helping I should start taking the steroids. I started taking them yesterday and thought they were beginning to help and then woke up today feeling worse. I have been fighting this for over a month and am on my second round of antibiotics with no real sign of improvement. I have not been able to work and am starting to become very frustrated. I am a bartender and there is way I can be on my feet for eight hours.

Your doctor may want to considere ordering a sinus CT scan, or refer you to an ENT. Again, sinusitis can be challenging to treat in some people...requiring higher doses of antibiotics, taken for a longer period of time.
