I'm a 27 year old that has been diagnosed with ADD since the 5th grade. *sigh*(seems so long ago) I started on ritalin but stopped when I was in HS. I think I was in denial. I realized as I got older that I have ADD and it's not going anywhere. I talked to my Doc and she put me on Concerta. (Great for me cuz its a 'once a day' so I can remeber it!) Only problem is I can't sleep. So here I am reading everything I can about ADD/ADHD at 11:00 pm and ran across the message about melatonin. Does anyone know if it works for adults as well?

Have you tried Stratera? I take that for my ADD and it doesn't keep me up at all, but makes it so I can concentrate so much better! As to melatonin, I have never tried it for ADD but I used to take it to help get me to sleep at night and I realized after taking it for a week that it was making me extremely depressed, to the point that I would break out in tears for no reason.

According to the book "Vitamins for Dummies" by Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac. and Dr. Elson Haas, M.D.:

Taking melatonin when your natural melatonin levels are already normal or high can cause
tiredness, headaches, nightmares, and depression. Long-term use may result in lowered sex drive. Other side effectes reported infrequently include mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation, itchiness, heightened nervousness, and unrest."

If you're experiencing sleeping difficulties, either consult a natural health care practitioner or your doctor or nurse for a saliva melatonin-level test before you start taking supplemental melatonin.

I have been taking it for around a week, and it seems to help, although i'm not sure. I know I fall asleep a little faster, however, i still wake up very easily in the middle of the night, I do know i can fall back asleep when I wake up alot easier, so that is good.

I don't know about its effects as far as getting to sleep faster, but my psychiatrist told me that it is good to take because your cells don't go to sleep at night when you do, and the melatonin is important for them to regenerate. So, I take it (whenever I remember).

I have bipolar 3 and ADD so i am on quite a few meds. i currently take 5 mgs 2 times day for my ADD, if i take more, i cycle too much in a day. i used to take trazadone for my chronic insomnia, but the doc took me off when i started to get too agitated and angry with everyone. she put me on klonopin and melatonin. I have had the best success with this combo. i take 6 mgs of melatonin a night and i forgot the dosage of klonopin, but i'm sure you don't need the latter if you don't have the bipolar issue. i would give it a try and see if it works for you-you may find either 3 or 6 mgs works. i sleep good and it doesn't have the side effects of some prescriped meds.
