Hi, my great aunt is in her late 60s and went to the hospital complaining of chest pain. They did an EKG, echo and a heart catheter (sp?), then her hemoglobin started dropping and they found a blood clot in her back. Now her kidneys are failing and she is not really responding to the dialysis treatment. Is there any other issues that could cause kidney failure since her heart test were fine before the catheter (sp?). Incidentally, she also had a valve replaced many years ago. Any information you can give me would be helpful.

It's hard to assign a cause when we only have one set of results: there might have been a lesser decline in kidney function before the most recent incident and all this recent stuff was 'the last straw'.

It's also possible that this is a case of "acute" (as opposed to "chronic") renal failure: this might actually be good news, because often an acute case can recover somewhat once the cause is corrected. Not always, but often.

Anything that reduces blood flow to the kidneys can damage them; it depends on how long and how severely the blood flow was reduced. Was any sort of imaging contrast used with the heart catheterization? Some of these imaging dyes are toxic to kidn eys (although they should have known a bit about her renal function before giving any iodine cntrast medium.

The main thing to find out right now is whether this is an acute or chronic case, what her blood tests have been recently and say, a year ago or six months ago, and whether the dialysis is a maintenance regimen for the rest of her life, or is just to take the load off of the acute kidney failure in hopes that some function will recover after a couple of months.

Was the blood clot in tissue or was it in an artery? Was there any significant blood loss prior to the event? What were her BP's when she was admitted? What meds prescription and over the counter does she regularly take?

My mom has a blood infection and has acute renal failure. What does this means and will she be alright.
