I was diagnosed with crohons back in '96. it was a horrible feeling too. The Drs had me on all type of meds--pentaza and predisone, which gave me more side affects than benefits. None of the meds really helped me out. I dealt with flare ups and ins-and-outs of the hospital for about 2 years when i had 8" of my small colon removed. Before I had the surgery, I was thinking that there had to be something else besides that crappy med, and I came across a company called Lifeplus that sells some VERY GOOD herbal supplements that had me feeling them even though I couldnt get the full effects of them because of the diseased section of my colon had progressed so far. I've been taking specific supplements that have boost my immune system and have me feeling good ever since that surgery. I havent had a flare up since I've been taking them. I even have my cousin, who also has crohns, on them. He thanks me so much for turning him on to something that actually works without all of those horrible side affects of those meds. The website is www.lifeplus.com. I take a very strong antioxidant called Proanthenols, a multi, and Omega-3 fish oil with Vitamin E, which helps the EPA and DHA acids last longer. These supplements have helped me out so much that I havent had a flare up and havent had to take any OTC cold meds this year.

Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements. You also can look at the ingredients in them and compare them to other sources. I find that I can often find supplements much less expensively that way. The "proprietary" or special to the company formulas are often just higher priced versions of supplements found less expensively elsewhere. (and are more expensive because they are a company that works on a "distributor" scheme.)

You can look up supplements in our Drugs and Treatments Library. I also recommend you look them up in the National Library of Medicine Dietary Supplements Labels Database

Ingredients of dietary supplements in this database are linked to other National Library of Medicine databases such as MedlinePlus® and PubMed® to allow users to understand the characteristics of ingredients and view the results of research pertaining to them, including the following characteristics:

* Uses in humans * Adverse effects * Mechanism of action
