Strawberry Allergy??

Greetings,

I have slowly developed a miserable skin rash. The rash is very small red bumps. It does not have an appearance of what I think of as hives. It started last Friday on my hands. By Sunday it moved into my arms. Now, a week later, it is covering my stomach, arms, hands, back, neck, legs, pelvis, and groin. I haven't changed anything in my environment or used any new cleansers, lotions, etc. The only thing I can think of is maybe an allergic reaction to strawberries. When I was a toddler, I had a reaction to strawberries, but have never had a repeat of that. However, I had strawberries both Friday and Sunday nights. Can a food allergy last a week and worsen throughout that week? Or does it sound like I have something else entirely? Should I wait it out or see a doctor?

Another thought, I have been trying to get pregnant. I'm not sure that I am (and would only be a couple weeks if I was). Would pregnancy cause this reaction?

It does not appear to be contagious, as my husband has not gotten any of this.

I have tried searching all over the 'net and have come up with nothing. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. -Thanks, Mrs. Itchy, 31 year old female

The sudden appearance of an itchy rash is usually due to an allergic reaction. The cause is usually a medication, but a few adults are allergic to groups of foods. One such group is the Rosaceae family, which includes apricot, almond, plum, strawberry, apple, peach, and pear. An allergen skin test and a blood IgE test are available for the Rosaceae family of foods, but the best test to confirm such an allergy is a double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge, performed only by a few allergists.

An allergic rash can be treated by OTC generic Benedryl and a hydrocortisone cream, while you are waiting to see an allergist. Pregnancy would not cause an allergic rash.

The grocery stores in Tucson have had specials on baskets of large strawberries during the past week, so we have also been eating them, sometimes dipped in sour cream, then brown sugar.

Thank you, Dr. Enright. I will get in touch with an allergist to get this figured out. One more question - how long can a food allergy affect the body? I've had this rash for over a week now (thought it does seem to be improving) - could it be something else entirely?
