Hello Doctor, Two days ago (Wed) I started experiencing the urge to urinate (a little pressure and slight burning) more than usual. (I'm 62 yrs. old) Thursday I started to feel feverish also. I went to the drug store and picked up AZO Standard Phenazopyridine-Hydrochloride. Figuring it was a urinary tract problem. I took two pills as perscribed last night and this morning. My pulse is up and I still feel feverish I slept quite a bit today and have been drinking extra water. My temp. is 100.7. When my wife came home she recommend that I quit the AZO Std. and go to walk in clinic. Do you feel that this will work it's self out if I continue to take the medicine? Thank you for your time, Bob

No, you cannot ignore it. You need to see a doctor right away. The stuff you are taking will only mask any symptoms of infection, You need to be on antibiotics to kill the bacteria, and soon. The longer you wait the harder it will be to treat. Good antibiotics for male infections are Cipro or Levaquin. Some doctors like to use sulfa but they take longer to work, are not as effective, and you need to be on them much longer. Don't let them put you on a cephalosporin or PCN type drug as they do not get into prostate tissues very well. And be sure they send a urine for culture, to see what grows and what it is sensitive or resistant to. For my patients, I also put them on Celebrex to reduce swelling and inflammation and also an alpha blocker like Flomax to make it easier to urinate.
