Erectile Issues - pregnancy

My wife and I began trying to conceive a child in January. Up to that point, I never had issues with obtaining erections nor ejaculation. I am 29 years old and have been sexually active since age 16 (i.e. sex). Since January, about 40-50% of the time I am unable to stay erect during intercourse and/or not able to ejaculate. I believe it is in my mind since I have never had issues before we discussed and began trying to have a child. Obviously, we both want to get pregnant and this has put a small strain on our relationship. I am in good shape, have a beer or two each day, and smoke a cigar once a month while golfing. To the best of my knowledge, my father did not have these issues, but at this point I am willing to discuss with him to make sure this isn't family related. I was given a high cholesterol reading in August 2007 (above 240 and family related on my dad's side), and since that time have lost 20+ pounds (I am 6 ft. 5 inch tall) and weigh around 190, through active dieting and exercise my cholesterol fell over 25% to 180. My goal is to get it down to 150, if possible.

Let me know if this is common and if it makes sense after 4+ months to see my doctor and have him refer me to a urologist. Thanks

Sounds like you've got some unwanted stress from the pressure to conceive. If you can, you should eliminate the drinking altogether, as you're really past the limit for healthy sperm production (think one or two a week, not one or two a day). Take Dr. Marks's recommendations for a sperm-healthy diet. Get adequate rest, no hot baths or saunas, or drugs. You're quite thin, so hopefully your body isn't starved for resources used in sperm production because you're dieting or exercising too hard.

The diet and exercise stress alone (depending on your program) could be enough to cause problems with erections, and with sperm quality.

TTC for more than 6 months might suggest a sperm analysis (very easy). But more than a year is really the flag for concern. Even perfectly healthy couples only have a 30% chance of conception when they try.
