I've read on a Doctor's site that recommended 800 vitamin D, that too much D is harmful? Does anyone know about this?

Also, I read something that said we should be taking at least as much Magnesium as we do Calcium?!

How does one have hope of finding out accurate information about these things?

Thanks for your replies!

800 IU of Vit D is not too much. The updated recommendation is 800-1000 IU. Some doctors are now even recommending 2000. When you consider that you can get 10,000 IU on the beach without sunscreen in 1/2 hour, it's fine.

The magnesium is important if you have a problem with constipation and calcium.

Look at the National Osteoporosis Foundation website for current valid info. www.nof.org

First you have to find a site you can trust. I know a well respected vegetarian Dr. who recommends 2,000 IU Vitamin D a day. I wouldn't take any more than that. I believe it's fat soluble. Beth recommends 1,000, and I think that's fine.

Magnesium can act like a laxative. I can't take more than 250mg. as a supplement. You just have to find out what's right for you. The bone health calculator should help you know how much you're getting from your food and how much you need as a supplement. You'll just learn from experience.

There may be more to the magnesium than just a laxitive.

This is controversial, but according to this source http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesium.asp

Bone health is supported by many factors, most notably calcium and vitamin D. However, some evidence suggests that magnesium deficiency may be an additional risk factor for postmenopausal osteoporosis [4]. This may be due to the fact that magnesium deficiency alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that regulate calcium (20). Several human studies have suggested that magnesium supplementation may improve bone mineral density [4]. In a study of older adults, a greater magnesium intake maintained bone mineral density to a greater degree than a lower magnesium intake [56]. Diets that provide recommended levels of magnesium are beneficial for bone health, but further investigation on the role of magnesium in bone metabolism and osteoporosis is needed.
