my 52 yeard old husband was diagnosed with adult ADD. He was given the above med after an oral evaluation, filling out a questionair, an interview with me and the doc and a test called brain mapping.

after some research i am interested in why this med was prescribed.

look forward to your response!

Hello chari48206,

Medications for AD/HD increase the neurotransmitter dopamine, norepinephrine, or both. Stimulant medications increase both, but it's primarily the increase in dopamine that improves focus. Imipramine (Tofranil) is an older tricyclic antidepressant that was considered a second-line medication for AD/HD, primarily used when stimulant medications were ineffective or not tolerated. It is rarely used today because of the potential for cardiac problems in children and adults over the age of 45. Imipramine has a far less chance of treating AD/HD than a stimulant medication. A minority of people respond better to a medication that increases norepinephrine, but Strattera is generally a much better choice than Imipramine. Honestly, I can't tell you why someone would use imipramine as a first-line medication for the treatment of AD/HD.

I wish you and your husband the best, Dr. Richard Sogn.
