Well, it depends on your bipolar meds. I have severe back problems and need my back meds... I was taking Geodon and prozac while taking Ultram and Fiorecet and Soma. They said it was ok but were talking about the state Drs. so, I don't know if they know anything....I'd ask another Dr. Pain contributes alot to depression, which doesn't help your situation at all.

Good luck to you Amy Shannon

Have you tried accupunture, hydrotherapy, hypnosis, visualization, botox or any of several other alternative medical therapies?

I depends on the meds. The meds you are taking for Bipolar and pain. I have been on some heavy levels of pain meds for the past 10 years. Was in the military and was shot a few times, betwen that and them trying to fix things I ended up with "severe, cronic nerve pain". Have been on everything from morphine, oxycontin, mscontin, tramidal etc. What ended up working best is a transdermal patch system that uses fentanyl. Its absorbed through the skin and your body pulls it as needed. Avoids the mental addiction and you get a constant level of relief. You could also ask about a TENS unit. Its a form of muscle relaxation/excercise system that uses a pad to send an electric current into the area. It helps raise your pain tolerance and at the same time "resets" the pain receptors to ignore pain up to a higher level. Hope this helps. PS Tramidol works great for pain and, if I remember right, it is a synthetic med and not derived from morpine.

I am bipolar, on medication for it as well as medication for PTSD and anxiety. I am also on pain medication for what was intolerable pain due to severe spinal abnormalities (which have led to some other problems). Without them, I was bedridden. I also have epilepsy, migraines, so some of the meds are helpful for two or more conditions. For instance the Topamax treats my seizures, PTSD, bipolar, and migraines. The Lamitil treats my bipolar and epilepsy...having a good group of doctors that communicate is essential. I am on oxycontin and oxycodone for break through pain. I have no side effects from any of the medications (and there are several more I have not mentioned). Of course, I was not put on all of these at the same time. Each medication was introduced over a period of 5 to 10 years, with many changes within that period of time. I have been on the same medication regimen for approximately a year now, with only increases in my Lamictil dosage. I know other people in my support group that are also on pain medication and meds for their bipolar or other mood disorder. I DO KNOW doctors are not receptive to patients telling them what to do, so I hardly know what to tell you. I go to a pain clinic as well as the psychiatrist and neurologist. I would recommend looking into specialist in each field. There is no reason to go through life in pain and misery when it can be effectively treated.

Good Luck...Free
