I brought my son to the ER early this morning because of an allergic reaction to something (not sure what). His lips and his eyelids were swollen and he was breaking out in hives. The ER doc said to give him Benadryl and to watch him and if he swells again to bring him right in. His doctor wanted to see him this afternoon so we went in and were given a script for prednisolone (sp?) and an epi pen just in case and again I was told to watch him and if he has difficulty breathing to use the epi pen and call 911. He is sleeping peacefully right now but of course I keep staring at his chest to make sure he is breathing OK. Now, maybe I just need reassurance but if he was having trouble breathing wouldn't he be doing something other than sleeping peacefully, like maybe wheezing, restless or something? I know this is a ridiculous ques but I am paranoid!! LOL

Thanks!

Kristen

I know how scary allergic reactions can be. One time my son was broken out in hives all over his body for over two weeks straight. He would swell up on random parts of his body, including his eyelids, lips, feet, hands, etc. His swelling would come and go, and the scary part was you never knew when or where it would show up, so I let DS sleep in my bedroom right beside of my bed so I could keep a very close eye on him for the whole time he had the hives. One time during those two weeks, his lips got really swollen and he started coughing and couldn't stop. I rushed him to the ER, but by the time that I got there his coughing had slowed down alot. But they did say that coughing was a sign that the swelling was affecting his airways. I would definitely watch for signs like that. The pred is very good at helping get allergic reactions under control though, so I would just make sure to give him that and the Benadryl as often as the dr said to and don't miss a dose of it. I would also see about getting him to an allergist for testing to find out that is causing his reaction. My DS is allergic to strawberries, so we now know to keep him away from them. GL. I hope your son feels better soon.

http://www.allergy.org.au/images/stories/anaphylaxis/Action_Plan_anaphylaxis_personal.pdf is the anaphlaxis plan that we use with my son, it is simple, informative and helps to sort out when to become concerned. This is now a compulsory plan for all aussie kids with epipens in school and several friends that live overseas have had their dr fill one out to keep with their epipens. HTH's.

The prednisolone will help to counteract the swelling but will not stop anaphylaxis occuring which is why you were also given an epipen to have on hand. HTH's
