I had my stent removed yesterday afternoon, after having it in place for a week, due to a kidney stone that was stuck in my left ureter. (The stone were broken up by laser last Monday) Anyhow, the removal was a nightmare, though a quick one. My concern now is that the tip of my penis stings every 10-15 minutes for a few seconds and then stops. Is this normal? It started doing this a few hours after the removal of the stent. And lasted until 12am. Now, its back this morning. It doesn't sting when Im urinating, however. I noticed it happens when I'm sitting down. I'm taking percocets every 6 hours to control the pain in my lower back. Could the stinging be from a damaged nerve or the numbing gel? If it doesn't subside by this afternoon, I'll have to call my physician. I'd appreciate any input though.

Rollin,

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I've had two lithotripsies done in the past month for two different stones. I currently had a stent in. An x-ray taken last week, shows a stone fragment caught in my ureter. I'm supposed to return to the Urologist this Friday for another x-ray. He had mentioned doing a surgical procedure to remove the stone by inserting a scope in my penis. Did you have this done as well? My question ( posted it too) is why wouldn't the stone fragment come out when the stent is removed? It seems to be lodged up against it. I had no idea that one would experience so much pain after the removal of the stent. You poor guy!! Maybe I should plan to take more time off from work, if the stent is removed Friday. What is your opinion? Please let me know what the doctor say's about the pain you're experiencing and if there is concern for damage. Good luck to you. Thanks!!

Hi. Well, the stinging seems to have stopped. Doctor Sheldon had also reponded and said it may have been a fragment that had not yet passed out of my bladder. Apparently, he was right, because after I posted to the message board, I went to the bathroom, and some little dark things came out in my urine. I believe they were little blood clots and maybe a fragment or two. So far today, Ive been good to go! My urine is nice and clear too. I think drinking a lot of water helped too.

As for your situation, you're better off getting the scope/laser treatment for the stone that's stuck in your ureter. That's what I had to do. It wasn't that bad because your under general anesthesia, so you have no idea whats going on. The wake-up is a little uncomfortable, because you'll feel like you have to pee every 5 minutes for the first 12 hours or so. And that's inconvenient because you'll be sore in your lower abdomen and groin area, so it'll be hard to sit up and stand up, etc. If possible, it'd be great if the doctor could break up the stone and NOT have to leave a stent in there. But its up to the doctor. As for the stent removal, it was the least fun I've had ever. BUT, like I said before, it was quick. I wish they could put the patient to sleep for the removal too! Good luck with your stones.

Because of how we are wired, anything that irritates the lower ureter as it enters the bladder, bladder base, bladderneck, prostatic urethra or anything along the urethra is felt as pain at the tip of the penis. narcotics only dull the pain and constipate, as well as cause nausea. Ask your urologist about anti-inflammation medications such as Celebrex which will reduce swelling and inflammation, as well as possibly Pyridium which numbs the lining of the bladder and urethra (though it will stain your urine orange). Also, maybe a followup study may be needed to be sure that all fragments have passed and that the pain is not from a small stone stuck about to enter the bladder.
