Uh, oh. Time for another bad mommy award. Alex has an eczema flare-up all over the back of one leg, and I cannot find his Rx'd eczema cream. The last time I used it, a few weeks ago, I remember I took it down to Alex's bedroom (it's usually always in my room where the kids can't get it) b/c he had had an accident in his underwear and I threw him in the downstairs bathtub. I will be searching high and low for it the rest of the day, but if I can't find it, I have a problem. The kids' insurance is still on hiatus, and the cream is really expensive (over $100.00) What can I use in the meantime (should be less than 2 weeks until the new insurance kicks in) Eucerin? Aquaphor? Cortizone Kids? Anything else OTC that anyone's found effective?

Also, for you asthma sufferers....does an eczema flare-up usually coincide w/ an asthma flare-up? Alex has been acting very crabby today and clingy. Unusually so. He seems to be breathing OK, but I'm wondering if he is having trouble. Our backyard backs up to a hay farm and they've been cutting hay the past few weeks. And we've been outside a LOT.

UGH! Yes, eczema and asthma goes hand in hand at my house. It may be in part due to the warmer weather? That seems to be a trigger for my guy. We use aquaphor and otc cortisone. When my son was much younger, we used rx-strength cortisone.

aye...also walmart sells a very thick petroleum cream that I love. it coats everything from the air for awhile and that can help if there's anything open from the scratching. It's in a white jar. equate dry skin cream.

I'll bet it is. Eczema is auto immune, if I understand that right, and all kinds of stress inducers/irritants can cause flareups.

Good luck. Hope he feels better soon

I don't know anything about eczema, but I know in my area (Western New York), we have an ozone advisory in effect. I heard on the news that it was from 1pm-10pm. I have kept Jonathan in the house for the afternoon.

I don't know if this helps or not.

Wheeze, scratch, cough, scratch, wheeze, whine, cough, scratch. Yep, it all goes together here....

Eucerin works well in a pinch for us. Hope you find it soon, or you can tell me what it is and I can see what I can do for you.

Whew!

The poor baby....usually he gets red/flesh-colored bumps that resemble heat rash more than anything, which was why I never thought to mention it to his pedi for a long time -- until it started getting worse, not better one spring.

This time, it's presenting like typical eczema -- the dry-ish looking round/oval patches. All over the back of one knee. I'm wondering if him having been in his carseat so much this week, coupled with the heat, is causing the flare-up. It's right where his knee bends and comes into contact w/ the carseat fabric. I jsut washed it and it's drying. We'll see.

Thanks everyone!

HI there,

I am new here but I found your post as I was researching products to help my own eczema flare. I've struggled with it most of my adult life (and some of my childhood). My 5 yr old DD also has eczema (not very bad though) and very sensitive skin. Given that history, I thought I would reply to your post.

You are absolutely right, the carseat cover might be aggravating your son's skin. Both my DD and I get eczema patches when something scratchy or irritating touches our skin, especially when the skin gets moist. My daughter can't wear shorts very often - if she sits on a chair or carpet she gets rashy! And the return of capri pants was the best thing that ever happened to me - I always had a rash on my upper thighs when I was younger from sitting on chairs, etc. in shorts.

So I would suggest that you put him in longer pants when he's going to be in the carseat for any length of time, or put a very soft towel or old cloth diaper under his legs. You want something to absorb the sweat.

When my daughter gets those dry little patches on her legs I always try using Moisturel on the patches (a moisturizing lotion, not a steroid) . If you are patient and the spots aren't making him too miserable, the Moisturel works.

My DD have Eczema and when hers flares up she starts coughing at night the pedi. says it is asthma and when they mow the freeway (we live right next to) she will start with the eczema and coughing she is worse in the winter for some reason but anyways I have started using Nexcare advanced Body Lotion on her and it works great. I also just wash in all free, and she uses Dove Body wash per Dermatologist (I hope that is how you spell it) she has been doing good for about 5 months now so I guess something is working hope that helps

Something to consider w/ the eczema is to remove dairy from the diet. My children had it severely from birth til 2-3 yrs until I learned how food allergies (sopecifically dairy) could cause eczema. Once I removed it, it has not returned.

I can vouch for the dairy allergy. My daughter had terrible eczema and cradle cap from birth til she was four or five months old. The ped just prescribed Elidel and told me to put it on her "head to toe". Since I had used the same medication and knew about the burning side effect, I opted not to use it on Lily. Glad I didn't use it, since it is not approved for use in infants.

Since I was nursing Lily I decided that perhaps the cause of her eczema was whatever dairy products I was eating. I had read that dairy proteins are sometimes difficult for nursing infants. I eliminated dairy from my diet and within a few days Lily's skin calmed down. Eventually it was gone for good and she had nice skin again.

By the way, she continued to have problems with dairy (mostly fluid milk) until she was 4 or so. Didn't cause rashes as much as gas and bloating.
