I am 65 years old. I recently went off Premarin .045 mg after being on this drug since age 30. I have had an onset of hypertension. Extremely high (220/120) upon arising in AM and remained high all day but going down to 150/90 mid day. Still going higher with excitement and just before bedtime. Went to MD and put on Labetalol 300 mgm tid. Has reduced the numbers significiantly. Still elevated in AM and goes up in PM but remains normal during the day unless I get extremely stressed. Now the morning readings are 150/88, going down to normal during the day. The bottom numer remains low with highest number 88 but top number rises with excitement or anger, etc. MD says it is hormonal and I am excreting adrenalin and cortisol more than normal. Is this medication the best I should be on? Will my BP ever go back to normal readings and what is making this extra excretion of these hormones? Could going off Premarin caused this. How dangerous is this with the readings as they are?

Dear Tunseypot,

Your questions are good ones, but need to be addressed with your doctor who has the training and knowledge of your health history to give you an expert answer. There is no 'best' blood pressure medication, because everyone has a different response and experience. A medication that might work great for me, might have too many side effects or not work well for you.

Here's a Hypertension FAQ which may answer many basic questions you have. However for specifics, remember to ask your doctor.

Yours in health,

Byroney

Tunseypot, I, too, had taken Premarin for many years. When I was taken off Premarin at age 60, my GYN had me wean myself off of it EXTREMELY slowly. In fact, it took 3 months to wean myself completely. He said that's because of adverse affects, such as hypertension, night sweats, flushing, headaches, nausea and insomnia. The Premarin (and any other hormone thereapy) affects the body's adrenal system, and it could actually be dangerous (blood clots, stroke) to go off hormone therapy too abruptly. I don't know how your doctor weaned you off it, but that COULD be the cause of the unusual hypertension. I read that if you're taking almost any kind of blood pressure medication, it should always be combined with a diuretic to be really effective. I hope this helps in some way. BonitaPaz
